I’ve never met a pitcher who trains to be mediocre. Serious pitchers are seeking high-performance pitching. Recently this became very apparent to me. I was doing an initial assessment of a pitcher I now train. He was visibly frustrated as I was asking him our new player questions because he hadn’t reached his velocity goals yet. So I asked him another question – what’s your currently training look like?
His answer floored me.
Throws seven days a week, lifts six days a week and does hard core cardio five days a week.
When we got through the questions and moved into video analysis he became even more frustrated. All of the work he had been putting in wasn’t moving the needle because he was doing it without focus. We went through the five phases of the delivery in detail so he could fully understand the recommendations I was providing him.
He relaxed, became more confident and even laughed. He had realized more is not necessarily better when developing as a pitcher. Quality must be prioritized over quantity. We completely overhauled his training and developed a plan specific for him. Now he understands what to focus on, how to recover and feels in control of his development.
